The passive or curious Baxter listener would do better picking up the two-disc retrospective on Capitol entitled The Exotic Moods of Les Baxter. While it's fun for the first track or two, it quickly becomes boring unless you have a high tolerance for mainly solo bongo beats, with the exception of "Shoutin' Drums" which features a nearly six-minute drum solo (what is this, prog rock?). By far the stronger album is Tamboo!, showcasing Baxter's continued foray into exotica utilizing a multitude of unusual arrangements, keeping the music oddly engaging, a vital component to this delicate genre of music.
